The Hope House Project
Imagine a place that combines caring intergenerational relationships, technologically enhanced senior housing, and a neighborhood where the eldest among us live in their own homes rather than in an assisted living facility or nursing home. This is the Hope House Project, a cluster of one and two bedroom apartments located in the heart of Hope Meadows.
Many of the elders at Hope Meadows have contributed to the community for over fifteen years as good neighbors and informal grandparents. Unfortunately, they are finding it increasingly difficult to remain in their current homes (originally built for young military families) as their health and mobility decline. The community wants to honor these increasingly frail seniors for the important role they have played in the life of the community. They desire a project that says, “Thank you. You have given so much to the neighborhood; now we will give back to you and support you until the end of your life.” The Hope House Project emerged from this desire.
The Hope House Project will allow older residents to live out their lives at Hope Meadows rather than being forced to leave the neighborhood. Their bonds to family and friends, their connections to what is familiar, and their sense of belonging will remain unbroken. It is these bonds which sustain and motivate them to remain engaged.
With the realization of the Hope House Project, Hope Meadows will continue to care for its own, and the community will value the presence of and be enhanced by the contributions of individuals at every stage of life. This innovative project will provide a vision of what aging in our society can be – one of hope not despair, integration not isolation, and purpose not pointlessness.
