Save the Date! GHDC is hosting a conference on November 10 & 11, 2011 in Champaign, Illinois – Living in a GHC: Staying Connected as We Age. This conference is designed to highlight the needs and challenges of staying socially connected for both younger retirees and more frail and/or mobility-restricted older persons. There will be a focus on ways to enable elders to stay connected through the end of life. The Hope Meadows program, where older adults maintain established relationships through their roles as indispensable companions, colleagues, mentors, and “grandparents,” will be featured, along with other Hope-inspired programs. Brenda Eheart received the 2011 In Harmony with Hope Award in a ceremony in Burlingame, California on Tuesday, September 20, 2011. The award is sponsored by Elfenworks Foundation and honors the accomplishments of leaders who are providing inspiration and hope in the face of difficult times. This is the fifth year that Elfenworks has presented this award. Other 2011 In Harmony with Hope Award winners are Jim McCorkell of Admission Possible, St. Paul, MN, and Bill Milliken of Communities In Schools, Washington, DC.

David Hopping invited to present at 2011 National Child Welfare Evaluation Summit

David Hopping was invited to present at the 2011 National Child Welfare Evaluation Summit in Washington DC August 29 – 31, 2011. His presentation reviewed the multilevel logic model and evaluation protocol currently being developed to address the multiple layers of programming and meta-programming involved in the Hope Meadows neighborhood model of intergenerational support for foster and adoptive families, which seeks to empower the community itself as an effective and ultimately primary intervention.

Construction of Hope House to begin

Hope House, a four apartment facility for older residents of Hope Meadows, will be built. Demolition of the building currently on the future site of Hope House has begun and construction will begin soon. See newspaper article.

Brenda Krause Eheart selected as a White House “Champion of Change”.

On Tuesday, June 7, 2011, Brenda Krause Eheart was highlighted as a “Champion of Change” by the Obama Administration in New Orleans. She participated with administration officials and other champions in a roundtable discussion on best practices to foster community service to effect social change. “Champions of Change” is part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative (www.whitehouse.gov/champions).

Brenda Krause Eheart has been invited to a one-day meeting, “Intergenerational Approaches to Improving Outcomes for Vulnerable Populations” which will take place on April 18, 2011 in Washington, DC. This meeting is being sponsored by the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) within the Administration for children and families (ACF) U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) .http://www.acf.hhs.gov/acf_events.html The purpose of the meeting is to bring together select experts on intergenerational programming with representatives of federal agencies to discuss issues related to programs that target at-risk children and youth and other vulnerable populations.
