Generations of Hope

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GHDC?

GHDC is a non-profit organization created to promote the mutual exchange of ideas and knowledge to further the development of Generations of Hope Communities (GHCs). GHCs are purpose-driven multi-generational neighborhoods that rebuild lives of multiple generations simultaneously through utilizing the caring power of ordinary people.

What does GHDC do?

GHDC supports the GHC Collaborative, creates programming for three generations in the areas of senior resiliency, family engagement, and child advancement, and it advocates for policy change at the federal, state, and local level. In addition, GHDC authenticates GHC-inspired and GHC-certified communities.

What does GHDC not do?

GHDC does not fund or build new GHCs. We are not in the business of real estate development or financial planning. We can however consult with the local leadership team and provide referrals to experts familiar with GHC development.

Where does GHDC get its funding?

GHDC is funded through a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. We are in the process of implementing our Strategic Development Plan 2010- 2012. The plan builds a development structure that is geared toward achieving exponential growth in earned-income streams and contributed revenue.

Who does GHDC work with?

GHDC works with individuals and groups wishing to create GHC-inspired or GHC-certified communities. We also work with scholars, developers, policymakers, researchers, and others interested in intergenerational community living as a strategy to solve social problems.

How do you start a GHC?

Initial steps include assembling a local management team, contacting local stakeholders, filing for 501(c)(3) status, and beginning your search for land on which to build. See the Getting Started Guide for more information.

How long does it take to develop a GHC?

It is a lengthy process and can take several years to complete. Although every situation is different, once the planning phase is complete, physical site development will take at least a year and program development will take several more until core community outcomes are achieved. See the GHC Development Framework for more information.

How much money does it take to develop a GHC and where does the funding come from?

The cost of building a GHC varies, depending on location, size and type of site, social challenge, etc. To build can cost over $10 million dollars. To acquire funding, GHDC recommends you work with a professional with expertise in community development and financial planning. GHDC can refer you to these professionals.
